There is no other Biblical truth that has stumped religion more than the issue of holiness. But, when you understand salvation as the Apostles taught it, your questions will be answered and it will all make perfect sense.
Salvation is more than forgiveness; you must be born again (John 3:3,7). Upon turning from unbelief to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, God removes your old sinful spirit and replaces it with a brand new, clean heart. Now a “clean vessel,” God has a place in you in which to dwell. He comes to live in you and join as one with you in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17).
You are made fully and forever righteous because the Righteous One lives in you (1 Corinthians 3:16-17); and, you possess eternal life because Eternal Life now dwells in your new heart (1 John 5:11).
God makes you holy in your born again heart. In fact, you cannot sin in your born again heart because Jesus in you cannot sin.
1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
This is Christian holiness.
Religion is focused on sin. God is focused on righteousness. Even though your mortal body has not yet been redeemed or made righteous, God lives in you to be your power to live a righteous life. You follow Him in faith.
