Changing the Word of God, Part 1: Forgiveness

Instead of accepting the Bible at face value, man-made religion has supported, for centuries, an incorrect system of understanding of the Bible that is based on false assumptions. One misunderstanding is related to not recognizing that the Law of Moses was ended by Christ so that He could implement the New Covenant. Jesus, Himself, is the New Covenant since both righteousness and righteous living now come through Jesus Christ living in a believer, not man’s attempts to follow the Law.

A second misunderstanding is that believers remain sinners and are only credited (imputed) with Christ’s righteousness. In fact, God gives believers a new heart filled with the Holy Spirit. This makes them fully and forever righteous in their born again heart. This, not forgiveness, is what saves a person.

Note: as a believer, you still lives in a not-yet-redeemed and still-able-to-sin mortal body. This is why you live by faith. When you die, your body goes to the grave since it has not yet been redeemed or made righteous but your born again spirit goes to be with the Lord forever because it has already been redeemed and made righteous. Your body awaits a future redemption (Romans 8:23b).

Forgiveness was God’s gift of grace to all people; a new heart filled with the Holy Spirit is God’s gift of grace to those who believe. The Bible says that there is NO forgiveness without the shedding of blood; Christ’s blood was shed ON the Cross and, therefore, forgiveness what fully accomplished 2,000 years ago.

Hebrews 9:22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

This may not seem like a big issue until you consider the way that the Gospel is falsely presented. It says that God loves you but you must change your behavior before you can come to Him for salvation. The true Gospel message says that God loves you and forgave all your sins. When you trust in Jesus Christ as Savior, God makes you righteous by giving you a new heart filled with His life. Behavior cannot change until God comes to live in you so that He becomes your power to live a righteous life.

Biblical Truth: All sins of all people for all time were forgiven and forgotten on the Cross of Jesus Christ. Faith is not required for forgiveness because forgiveness was accomplished on the Cross of Christ. The Holy Spirit is convicting the world of unbelief (John 16:8-9). Now, the only two issues in salvation are: [a] the single sin of unbelief and [b] the sinful heart that is in every unbeliever. Turning from unbelief to faith in Jesus Christ is necessary before God removes your old sinful spirit and gives you a brand new, clean heart filled with the Holy Spirit. Being made righteous is what saves you.

False Teaching: Forgiveness is realized only after a person does something to activate what Christ has already done. This usually involves trusting in Jesus Christ as Savior and accepting the “gift of forgiveness”; some say that baptism is required as well. Note: it is the “gift of righteousness” that you must accept by faith, not the “gift of forgiveness” (Romans 5:17).

Verses That Were Changed to Support this False Doctrine: For the most part, instead of the words of the Bible being changed, it is the interpretation of the verses that has been changed. This is just a sampling of the 30 or 40 verses whose interpretation was changed to support the false doctrine of limited or provisional atonement (forgiveness).

Mark 3: 28 Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men

Incorrect Interpretation: All sins were NOT forgiven the sons of men, ONLY the sins of those who will be saved. Note: this is the error of Calvin’s false teaching on limited atonement; see the blog, “The Error of Limited Atonement.”

John 1:29 The next day he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Incorrect Interpretation: Even though the Greek word for “world” is cosmos, theologians CHANGED the meaning to be “the world of believers.”

Romans 5:10a For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son,

Incorrect Interpretation: You were NOT reconciled to God while you were an enemy. Instead, Christ’s death made it possible to be reconciled to God IF you become a friend of God.

2 Corinthians 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation

Incorrect Interpretation: Even though the Greek word for “world” is cosmos, theologians CHANGED the meaning to be “the world of believers.”

Colossians 1:20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Incorrect Interpretation: God did NOT reconcile all things; He reconciled all things EXCEPT rebellious angels and unbelieving men.

I John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

Incorrect Interpretation: This is the third verse where theologians CHANGED the meaning of “world” to be “the world of believers only.”

Part B will deal with the denial of religious Christianity that born again believers are literally righteous.
