The world of religion focuses on sin and claims that forgiveness is the only issue in salvation. The Bible teaches that God forgave and forgot all sins of all people for all time on the Cross of Jesus Christ. This was God’s gift of grace to the world. The Bible is full of verses proclaiming this wonderful truth (see verses below). Yet, religion has people continually seeking forgiveness even though God fully resolved this issue 2,000 years ago.
John 1:29 The next day he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
2 Corinthians 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
All are forgiven but not all are saved because salvation is more than forgiveness. The Cross of Christ did not forgive one single sin, the sin of unbelief – the rejection of Jesus Christ as Savior. Whereas religion says that the Holy Spirit convicts believers of their sin, the Bible says that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of unbelief.
John 16:8-9 “And He (the Holy Spirit), when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;  concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
Forgiveness was fully resolved 2,000 years ago. But, two issues remain: the unforgivable sin of unbelief and the sinful heart that is in every unbeliever. Turning from unbelief to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior resolves the first issue.
When you believe, God resolves the second issue by removing your old sinful spirit and replacing it with a brand new, clean heart.
Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin (old sinful spirit) might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin;
A new heart is the promise of the New Covenant given to the children of Israel by Ezekiel the prophet.
Ezekiel 36:26 Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
With a new heart, you are a “clean vessel.” The Spirit of Jesus Christ now has a place in you to live. As He comes to live in you, His presence makes you fully and forever righteous in your born again heart because He joins as one with you in your spirit. You are righteous because the Righteous One lives in you, and you possess eternal life because Eternal Life now dwells in your new heart.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17b Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? …, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are
1 John 1:2 and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us –
Galatians 2:20a I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; …
God saves you by making you fully and forever righteous in your born again spirit.
Romans 8:10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
Your physical body has not yet been redeemed; this is the reason you live by faith. But, your new heart is righteous. A simple way to understand this is by considering what happens when a born again believer dies. Their body goes to the grave because it has not yet been redeemed or made righteous; but, their born again spirit goes to be with the Lord forever because it has already been redeemed and made righteous.
