Righteousness

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TEACHING IN THE BIBLE. God saved you by making you righteous in your born again spirit. And, He gives you the power to live righteously by His Spirit who literally lives in your new heart. Righteousness is what the Christian life is all about.

All sins of all people for all time were forgiven and forgotten on the Cross of Jesus Christ; only the eternal and unforgivable sin of unbelief was not forgiven on the Cross. All are forgiven but not all are saved because salvation is more than forgiveness. Only when that last sin of unbelief is turned to faith in Jesus Christ does God remove your old sinful nature and replace it with a brand new, clean heart.

Now a “clean vessel,” the Spirit of Jesus Christ has a place in you to live. As He comes to live in you, His presence makes you fully and forever righteous in your new, born again spirit. In other words, you are righteous because the Righteous One lives in you, and you possess eternal life because Eternal Life now dwells in your new heart. Righteousness is a gift and the gift is the person of Jesus Christ living in you by His Spirit.

So, if you are righteous why don’t you live righteously all the time? The reason that you do not always live righteously is because you still “live” in the same old mortal “tent” (your physical body) as you did before you became a believer, and it is still dead because of sin. Your physical body awaits a future redemption.

The life of a Christian is accurately described as a life of faith. Do you know why? You live by faith because you cannot live a righteous life by your own human strength since your physical body has not yet been redeemed or made righteous. As you follow in faith the inner life of Jesus Christ, He will live out His righteous life in you and do His good works through you. You are the hands, feet and mouth by which Jesus does His work in the world today.

These verses show that you are literally righteous in your born again heart. Notice Ephesians 4:24 which says that your new self (your born again heart) “has been” created in righteousness, not “will be.” Also, notice 1 John 3:9 which says that you cannot sin; you can never again sin in your born again heart because Jesus in you cannot sin. You can only sin in your mortal flesh (body). You live by faith in order to live righteously since you have no power to live righteously by your own human strength.

Romans 5:17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:10 and if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin (because it has not yet been redeemed), yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness (because it has already been redeemed).

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? [17] If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Ephesians 4:24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

1 Peter 1:23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God.

2 Peter 1:4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (Popular teaching says that this verse means a “lifestyle of sin.” No, this verse means what it says. You cannot sin in your born again heart because the Holy Spirit in you cannot sin.)
